Can you spot the difference in the image above? One is the Z Fold 4, and other is the Z Fold 5. Supposedly there is only a 0.2mm difference in height. This image and information was posted by noted Samsung leaker, “Ice Universe” @UniverseIce, on Twitter. He posted this image today with the caption “Z Fold 4 vs Z Fold 5 – Which do you prefer?” We have been hearing for a bit that the Z Fold 5 would likely have very little exterior changes, and likely a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 on the inside, but other than that not a lot of upgrades.
The Z Fold 5 looks to follow the trend of the S23 Ultra, but even less changes than the S23 Ultra – at least the S23 Ultra changed the sides from rounded to boxy. Is this the final form of the Z Fold phone? We learned with the S23 Ultra that the outside isn’t quite as important as what’s on the inside. While there weren’t a lot of visible changes on the S23 Ultra, and other S23 series phones, the big upgrade was the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 took the S23 Ultra to the next level, offering improvements in performance, better battery life, and reduced heat – the trifecta of System on a Chip (SoC) Upgrades. From what we’re seeing, it looks like the exact same chip will land in the Z Fold 5.
Another question you may be asking yourself is “what happened to a plus series chip this year?” Well, Samsung’s chip making side of the business is looking to experience the worst financial year in about 14 years due to the lack of demand for chips globally, so my guess is that’s impacting the availability of a “plus” chip, but that’s ok. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is an amazing chip that is worthy of the Z Fold 5. So, what do you think? Is adding the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 into the Z Fold 5 enough? Are you happy with the current form factor, or are you bored with basically 2-3 years of little design changes in the Z Fold phone?
